Thin-walled yew bowl
« on: November 02, 2014, 05:46:13 PM »
I spotted something like this on a forum the other day, and liked the delicate, light look of the bowl, so had a go at making one out of a nice, clean piece of yew. It's out of an 8" x2" blank, with the bowl wall just a tad over 3mm thick, and it's finished with carnauba.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Les,

I like it,

It is turned and finished to your normal high standard so I am sure it will find a happy home but...

One of the reasons I don't make many bowls is function. It's too small and delicate to have a useful function and too small to be a decorative or display item.

It looks good but what does it do - or am I being to functional in my thinking?

Should Vic, Woody' comment He'd say it's as He makes them, a Life Bowl .. all those things when we turn our pockets out.. so yep, keys, small change etc .. etc ..

Nice wood and form there,  Les.

Cheers  Dewi

As David says, a Life Bowl, and yes they are one of the few bowl/platter shapes I make. Great gifts for the Man that has Everything.

Thanks, guys, for all the comments. What I like most about the bowl, is the sheer simplicity. A single, sweeping curve, no beads, coves, foot or rolled rim, just a simple curve. It makes it a very simple shape to produce - so much so that I'm now using up loads of offcuts and making replicas of it in all sorts of sizes. I've discovered that the shape works equally well with contorted grain patterns, as it does with straight grain, as the shape in the bowl causes all sorts of pleasant curves in the grain.

Here's a smaller one in amazaque/ovangkol, it's out of a 6x3 blank and is just under 3mm thick - finished with carnauba over melamine

...for such a straight-grained piece of timber, you've got to love those curves!

These bows with small bases are typical of the work that Bert Marsh made his own. As you say, simple in shape and elegant, Not as easy as they look to get right as any defect scream at you. Not that I hear any screaming with yours LOL.
