Jewellery Box
« on: June 29, 2014, 04:04:58 PM »
Tony made one of these when he first started turning about 8 years ago, a family member had seen it on his web site and asked
him to make one.....It is 5"x8" in Yew (definitely Yew ) ;D......the insides are off set turned with a chrome rod down the back
and a pewter cap........The insides bases are lined velor felt.

Different to the usual sort of thing we have come to expect from you but no less quality. Like it a lot.

I looked at the first picture and thought 'I like that but an odd shape for a jewellery box' then saw the second picture and realised what the chrome rod was for. Now I really like it and not an odd shape at all.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

I keep looking .. what else can be said, WOW .. Brilliant, well executed and finished, only the lid/top is a tad off.

Top marks.    Cheers  David

I am sure the recipient of this will be well pleased. Just one question and I can't quite make it out from the picture, is this turned from a branch or is it a cut log ? I can't quite see if the pith is on the lid.

Hi Julian    It was turned from a branch in the round, it always seems a problem getting
the top tidy with it being end grain

I like this very much and am trying hard to ensure SWMBO does not see it - I can already hear her 'Oh, that's nice, could you....'

I've been looking as best as the photos will let me, I cannot make out the method used for the Chrome rod. Are the Cups hollowed off centre to give a deeper rim at the back, or have you inset something for the rod to rotate around.

I can see shiny bits in the full tower, do I assume that there are magnets inset to hold the piece in-line or are they something I've not thought about?
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Hi Bryan    They are hollowed off centre to leave 10mm at the back and 3mm at the front, then drilled at 10mm part, an old
knitting needle can then be used as the hinge down the back of all segments. I have put some more pictures of the one I put on my
website 8years ago (click green circle )were the hinge does not penetrate through the top no magnets it all just sits in place.
