Here a couple of cake or cheese or whatever stands.
« on: May 22, 2014, 01:01:37 AM »
Here are two cake or cheese or whatever stands. One is 9 inch in diameter the other 11 1/2. Both are 6 1/4 high. Black walnut with Honduras rosewood stem.

You've got a darned fine finish on those, Sevilla! If I had to choose a favourite of the two, it would be the laregr of them; not only for the proportions, but for the definition of the details and the delicacy of the base.

A lovely combination of woods as well.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

I'm stitting here looking at these imagining a nice Victoria Sponge sat on them, cream and homemade strawberry jam oozing out everywhere, oh yum...

Sevilla, these are great, I had to llok hard to decide on a favourite, but I think it's the lower one, the detail in the foot is just that little bit crisper.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Sevilla, viewing the small stand it lacks the defining details in both disciplines, faceplate & spindle, you've accomplished these details in the larger stand, though a fine touch would be matching fillets to the column base which would define the cove and make more of a transition with the flow, than what looks like just a scoop.

Both pieces are well executed and finished.

Now for Bryans' Sponge .. ;D ..

Did someone say Tea & Cake :)

Sevilla I like both the mix of wood and your fine turning as usual but I think that the larger one looks better balanced plus it will take a larger cake. :) :) :) :)

Nice job

Thank you all for the comments.

David, sorry for my ignorance but I'm not sure what you mean by "matching fillets to the column base" .
Could you elaborate a little for me? Thanks,
Sergio

Sergio, don't at anytime consider yourself as ignorance. Feel free to ask at anytime

The column of the large stand, below the final bead and upper part of the sphere, you've turn as a bird's beak what would be called a fillet, a step separating coves, beads, swells any part which makes up details on a spindle, even on a bowl/flat work etc.

It would have been to turn a flat fillet to the under side of the sphere and match it in depth/size as a repeat fillet to the base as half bead, then have a clean cove between them.

Have attached picture for example.   David
