Asian Style Vessel
« on: April 28, 2014, 11:25:32 AM »
A couple of weeks ago, I posted an asian style box but the lid wasn't so great. This is another one in the series in walnut with a ebony finial. It is 7" x 5" and finished with danish oil.
Comments and critque welcomed!

Clavico,

Nice, I like the shape and what you've done with the lid/roof. The grain pattern you've shown to the front works well.

I think the edges of the lid could be improved if you were to run a plane over them to crisp up the edge, it's something to consider.

Eh, is the finial a blackwood guitar string tensioner or similar?

Wow, good job! you discoved the viola tensioning peg. I think it works well but maybe too easily recognized. I'll think about those edges, thanks!

Hi Clavico....I remember writing on your first thread about these vessels and this is so great an improvement. The immediate impact upon opening the photo was of a clearly-oriental structure; and one that's a really pleasant shape, to boot! I agree with Bryan (dr4g0nfly) that the tuning button is a little obvious....do you have any blackwood? I have dozens of small pieces in stock and would happily post a couple to you if you want to have a go at making your own button/finial/

Let me know by private message if you want a piece and i'll post it to you.

Les,  thanks for the postive comments. The viola peg was just an experiment and isn't glued in. I agree that it would be better to make something of my own but similar. I may have some small pieces stuck somewhere.

Clavico,

no - don't replace the viola peg, things like this make a piece.

At best do something with it, can you turn it slightly to taper in the widest part or something.

Change it slightly, in some way, make it yours.

Hi Clavico

I like this, a definite oriental feel. The shape of the lid sets it off nicely, any chance of a photo of the base? I think the viola peg looks quite quirky, nice to see something different and see you experimenting.

This shows a little more of the base. There are three feet and a flat bottom.

Robert, you've captured the Asian theme just perfectly, nice details and the viola peg is something completely different, a talking point in fact. Like the piece. Well done.

Hi
Thanks for posting another photo, I like the way you've finished the base, overall a very nice piece. I don't recall seeing anything simliar to this, could this be the first one of a series? Keep them coming,
Regards
