Unidentfied Wood - Identified
« on: February 01, 2014, 12:24:51 AM »
We were given a what I now know is a bowl blank many years ago, and now that I've taken up turning I asked the question here if anyone knew what is was, and there was not a clear answer, the guy who gave it to us thinks that's it Capelli (I think that it's spelt right) and I've turn it in to this

It stands 55mm tall and 150mm in diameter

Hi Ed...I've never heard of capelli and couldn't find any reference to it. However, my immediate thought on viewing your pics was that it looks remarkably similar to the eucalyptus burr that Hughie turns, especially the resin canals and the overall colour.

I would say its Eucalyptus Burl [Burr] with resin veins, not particularly hard, but comes up well.

Heres one I did some time ago 30 cm dia flecked with Brass to simulate gold.

At first glance thought it was poplar burr, then don't think it has the veins not much help I know.
but you have made a grand job of the bowl.

I'd have suggested an Aussie burr, but Hughie's knowledge of them decides the point.

You made a very nice job of that for an unknown blank. Great finish.

The Eucalyptus Burr comes from a Eucalyptus tree of which we have 200 plus species, which type? I have no idea. This type of burl seems to come mostly from Tasmania, although I think my chunk [around 50kg ]  was bought locally here in Sydney so I suspect it came from NSW. As it was a slice of a even larger burr and would have been very expensive to move from Tassy to Sydney.

Not much under capelli etc Something similar is coco lumber or timber cut from coconut trees

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coconut_timber

This is the major reference to a capelli sea grass tree used in making matting and handbags

Ed, whatever the timber maybe, you have for sure turned it into a stunning piece, bringing out the very best which the blank had to offer. Really well done.
