« on: November 13, 2013, 08:27:20 PM »
Hi all,
I have not posted any items of late so here are a couple recently finished.
The first is a monkey puzzle bowl, it is 350X150mm. An end grain bowl.
I also cored out two more bowl blanks bur have completed the yet.
The second is a Chinese style lidded a copy of a ceramic one which I spotted in a museum
It is 170 Dia X 240h Spalted Horse Chestnut, this was on the point of rot.
C&C welcome.

Hi John, you've done a really good job on the monkey puzzle, got it just right to cut the branches equal, I like the 3rd picture it's like a wide eyed alien .. ET Phone home ...  ;D ...

Nice balance to the Chinese style pot, a classic form and you've copied it well.

Cheers for sharing.

John,

Monkey Puzzle if I'm not mistaken. A wonderfully coloured, and dramatic timber, you've used the knots to create some unusual and delightful designs for the timber, some I've not seen before, and the lidded pot has a wonderful shape to it

It makes me wonder why we don't turn more softwoods as artistic pieces. I know a couple of people who turn Lalandii, but normally we only turn it for structural spindles, a shame.

Having said that, at work this year they thinned an awful lot of trees, I'm watching a couple of piles of Scots pine for spalting (fingers crossed).
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the comments.
I do turn leylandii, as a soft wood it is good to turn (pleasant smell) the main problem is the sap this is also a problem with MP.
The MP blank was the one where I commented on wearing a glove (another thread)for roughing out.
Larch is good to use as well.
