I have heard that Davan are better than PC machines bit he doesn't advertise so it would be a case of word of mouth. Might be giving Sui an email at woodtattoos@hotmail.co.uk and asking him. He's the friend who specialises and writes on Pyrography. Tell him I mentioned him.

Pete

thanks Pete, for the intro to Simon.....he was extremely helpful and I've posted a couple of links to his site/facebook page in the 'Websites' section of this forum.

Graeham Priddle famously built his own machine, which he calls "the wood vaporizer". If you have a qualified friend you might have them build you one. I have an electrical qualification and built one from an old fashioned car battery charger. It works a treat. BUT...please do not attempt if you are not qualified or have little understanding of electricity and electrical components.

I have built one of these and 'wood vaporize' is a fair comment as the unit pours a lot of current through the wire tip. So much so my hand piece tend to heat up with extended use. The beauty of them is the low cost if your up or capapble of  building one.

Thanks Hughie....I was aware of the home-build system which uses a battery charger as its base, but my electronics are too doubtful for me to venture down that street, but thanks anyway for taking the trouble to answer.

I now have a Davan machine on permanent loan and have just bought a few wire tips to try with it, so will run with this system for the time being.

Les,

I've yet to branch into pyrography (it's something I am aiming towards) so I've followed this thread with interest. However as a forward looking sort of thing I've collected a couple of links about the subject, one that may be of interest to you and others is this one for purchasing Nichrome (resistance) Wire for making your own tips etc.

However if anyone else has similar - i'd be interested in having a look (hint, hint)
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…
