Some more scrap.
« on: May 12, 2013, 05:24:29 PM »
This is a slice of burr oak that was too soft in place to use for anything and a piece of root that I have cleaned and buffed. The three polished stones perhaps need to be a bit larger and I want to find a better piece of artificial cherry but overall at the moment I quite like it. Any comments, critique or further ideas welcome. At the moment it is all just placed in position not fixed so adjustments are possible.

Hello Pete, a lovely use of scrap.
I do think this would make a good club demo.

Thanks John. A lot of it is trial and error, putting pieces together and seeing what works. I'll see what I can gather together and work something out in advance. I could leave this one undone and use it as an example of odd bits as well.

looks good from here,I think the stones look the right size for the vessel and the use of the scrap as a background is a great idea, regars,

Eric.

Hi Pete....I'd really like to be able to step back and look at this from a few angles, but, for me, what works really well from the angle that you've photographed it, is the way that the irregular shape of the piece of standing root mirrors and compliments the shape of the branch.....I think that they are in really good balance.
Greta piece, I must start thinking outside that box that I got stuck into, 20 years ago!

This definitely has the feel of Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arrangement) to me.

Possibly because of the single 'swept' branch, but it really looks good like that.

I don't think an artificial branch would have the same effect - but would enable it to be sown off, pending a purchaser.

Gwyntog: I tried it with several different branches and this one seemed to work best. Sometimes it is a case of trial and error until something clicks.

dr4g0nfly: It is an artificial piece in at the moment. You can get artificial flowers that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing until you touch them and hopefully I will find some cherry. I use them for dressing displays at sales.

Hi Pete, I like how you've pulled the smallest of element together an made such a great diverse and interesting piece.

Well done

Hi Pete,
A very interesting piece, great idea.
I like the use of odd pieces of wood that on their own would only end up on the firewood pile.
This theme opens up countless combinations/ideas - well done

Ken.
