First Pen....
« on: March 28, 2013, 12:14:17 PM »
So, mandrel, slimline kits and some blanks arrived yesterday and was desperate to have a shot at a pen...

Discovered that 7mm drill bit was slightly out of alignment so had to get a new one this morning and e voila...

No idea what the wood is as received 5 random unnamed blanks.

Quite difficult to photograph and show the black inlay on the clip!!!

Am pleased with first attempt but C&C always welcomed.

Arcos,

I'd guess Beech for the first pen, it really looks like the right grain for it. No idea about the others, not enough detail in the photo's (hint - hint!)

They look good, how have you finished them?

dr4g0nfly, Beech or Maple for the first one, Walnut for the middle and Olive for the 3rd. They are all finished with BLO and CA glue (another first). I have two more slim pens to turn today and then will have a crack at a Sierra pen. Have got a beautiful piece of Peach that I want to use for the Sierra.

I received 2 of the same blanks, wood unknown, so I am going to have a go at force drying a piece of Medronho in the microwave and see it I can turn it to a pen.

David, thank you!!! I too like the center pen. More of a 'classic' shape and, to be honest, I prefer darker wood anyway.

Ain't wood turning a whole lot of fun!!!!  ;D
