Mortar AND Pestle ;-)
« on: January 28, 2013, 10:49:33 AM »
As suggested by many I finally turned a pestle!

I really enjoyed it actually and am reasonably pleased with the end result.

It is made from olive BUT it's a green piece of olive hence the colour different! (No I didnt plan to turn a green piece!!)

Quite like the contrast though!

Hi arcos,
very well done. I have but one observation (not a criticism)the top of the pestle(the crusher) should be rounded a bit more so as to fit the hand more comfortably. Otherwise I like it.

Thats a nice set Arcos, are you planning to use this, or is it a show piece?

Thank you for everyones kind words!

John BHT... Thanks for your observation... I agree with you! The top could be/should be more rounded HOWEVER, it isnt as acute as it appears in the photo and does not dig in or hurt the hand in use. I need to make a sanding disk to make finishing this kind of thing easier/quicker.

This piece WILL be a display piece BUT I have someone who wants to buy it! The original suggester of the mortar and pestle... So, now I am, tomorrow, going to make another with matching mortar and pestle and see which they prefer. I will use one as a display piece and one as sold.

The other 'issue' I have is that the mortar isn't really the right shape internally so it would be much better to have a 'perfect' piece for display.

David, I really enjoyed making the pestle! It probably took me MUCH longer to make than was really necessary as I kept shaving bits off here and there just to see what it would come out like. However, its a great little project and I think would be really quick to make once the 'design' was decided upon.

Tomorrow is a big wood turning day and I am hoping to get a few 'different' things made, including a mortar and pestle (matching), a couple of bangles and a tea light holder WITH insert!

Watch out for some photos tomorrow and I really do appreciate all comments and observations/criticisms!

Hi arcos,
it's not how quick you can make it but how it looks in the end and more importantly how much enjoyment you get out of making it.
