Paul,

I really like the outline shape of this bowl, the knot gives it an ounce of character and the medullary rays have really popped well.

You don't note the dimensions though, I'd guess at 8" or a little over as a diameter.

Paul,

Since seeing it on the lathe, you've finished it really well, with the oil and wax there couldn't be a better finsh.

For the 1st, you've mastered it well, be very pleased with it.

Cheers David

Yes. For a first try at woodturning you've done very well. I remember my first bowl which had tool marks and some rough areas - I think that was oak too. Yours is much better than that ever was, so well done. Keep on turning and practicing. It's a great hobby and very addictive. Welcome to the world of woodturning. Malcolm.

Thanks for your comments, I have done a few things but this was my first go with oak everything else has been off cuts and bits of branch. I must say I think I prefer greener wood than old dry oak it seems hard on your tools and hard on your arms.

Paul,

I'm quite sure that is not the first thing you've learnt about turning, and is it far from being the last, but it's a good first statement in these forums.

Both Dry and Wet timbers have there place, as time goes by you'll come to fully appreciate the difference and worse still, that fact that there is really no such thing as Dry Timber only various degrees of wet!

Hi Paul,

Well done on producing a good looking bowl. Dry wood will require regular sharpening of your tools but I think you already know that - ;D

One tip, if you don't keep the bowl, or other pieces you turn, make sure you take photos of your work. They make a great reference to see how your turning progresses over the years. All too often, turners give their work away as presents or, better still, sell them, without keeping any record of what they made.

Pretty sure my first bowl wasn't finished that well. LOL. Not the easiest wood to get a good finish on anyway. As said, no wood is totally dry and you may find that that opens up around the knot when indoors so keep an eye on it.
