More boxes
« on: January 06, 2013, 09:29:04 PM »
Having been asked to do a short demo at the next meeting of my local club I thought I`d put in some practice this evening.

First one made from spalted Sycamore.

Second one made from rippled Olive Ash

Sorry about the quality of the photos, the good lady wife has had a new camera so something else to learn  ??? ::)

Cheers.

Doug,

I love the timber of the spalted sycamore but the shape does not work for me. The slightly bulbous base with tapered sides is okay, but then the lid is overly high and the mushroom top just does not flow comfortably - sorry.

However the Rippled Olive Ash box, now that is a beauty.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

I dont mind the proportions of the sycamore box but for me the beads stick out too far on both of them
good luck with the demo

Thanks for all the comments, always appreciated

The Olive Ash has gone already  ;D

The present Mrs Barratt (after laughing at my photographic attempts) has just re-photo`d the Sycamore, so I`ll add it here, not to change anyones views, more to shut her up by publicly admitting she`s better with a camera than me  :P

Perhaps I do need a few camera lessons.

Cheers.

Doug, I like them both, the Olive Ash has the edge just over the sycamore, the side of the lid looks straight, could it look better if it flowed more with or from the line of box through the beads, then the bead if not altered sets a limit to the form.

That's just my view.

Hello Doug,
if you made the boxes to the shape that you wanted they must be the right shape. If one person likes and another dislikes that is down to their personal choice. I think the finish looks good and we all assume the the lids fit well, very difficult to photograph a good fit no matter how new the camera. I like the fact that the grain lines up. I wonder did you decorate the bottom of the box or lid? I applaud the symmetry of the beads.
I think the sides of the lid and box could have been lined up a bit better on the Sycamore box and the beads on both boxes seem to make the lid appear slightly open but otherwise I like them both.Good luck with the demo.
