just bought the biggest set of verniers i've ever seen. 42" capacity.

for scale it is next to my 24" ones and my normal sized 6".

cost me £70 when new these are about £500+

Did you buy that vernier caliper new?
I suspect not 99.9% of new calipers are pearlised against rust yours is not so there is some age in it close the jaws carefully please dont bang them together if there is no gap and the jaws open equal the gap at the top is the same at the bottom they should be ok.
Being a fair length and second hand you have to be careful you have no history of this item what sort of abuse has been dished out to it especially if its come out of a engineering workplace.

i only bought my litle 6" calipers new, the two larger ones were ebay bargains as far as i'm concerned.

the 24" set are a great quality Moore and wright but the biggest one is made by Huddersfield gauges ltd and you are right in saying that they may not have any rust protection but other than that they are in perfect nick.
