Benjamins Best 1-1/2" HSS Round Nose Scraper
« on: November 26, 2019, 07:36:27 PM »
Hello folks, just thought I'd introduce myself!

I've only been woodturning for a couple of months and I'm just getting used to my tools at the moment really.

I have seen someone on YouTube using a Benjamin's Best 1-1/2" HSS Round Nose Scraper which I think would be of great value to me, it comes as a standard one sided bevel but the gentleman in the video had modified it into a double-sided bevel which I would probably do. The problem is, I can't find it for sale anywhere in the UK. Has anyone seen this for sale? I went on Axminster's website and couldn't see it, I visited one of their shops and they didn't have it there.

There's plenty of 1" Round Nose Scrapers about but that won't be too different to the 3/4" I'm using now. I'm just thinking of a nice sweeping gradient when I'm turning the inside of a bowl.

Regards
David

why does it have to be a benjamin's best tool?

there are plenty of 1 1/2" scrapers available.

Well, the Benjamin's Best ones I've seen for sale in the US are much cheaper ($30-$40). I don't really want to spend £90 on one scraper if I can help it!

It doesn't have to be a Benjamins Best though, just depends on the price and quality I suppose.

Thanks for replying.

I just keep my eye on ebay and occasionally pick up HSS scrapers, round and square-nosed,at 1.5" width, for about £20 to £25 each, then grind them up and sell them to my students. If you're not in a mad rush, it's a good way to get one.

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Sorby one is around £55 others are similar prices. Tools are often cheaper in the USA, but not once you have shipped them over. I dont know of any uk dealers for pen state tools.
TT, AKA Pete, but that name is taken :-)

I'm just in the process of oiling a handle I made & fitted to a large HSS scraper I bought the from Ashley Iles at the Harrogate show, unhandled it cost £36.
Here it is awaiting its final coat of oil lying next to my Sorby roughing gouge.

Nice work Doug, I see I am not the only one who copies Sorby handle design :)

Thanks Twisted. Yep, probably works out the same price in the end.

I have a large quantity of second hand turning tools which belonged to Ray Key which I'm selling on behalf of his widow, Liz. There are many scrapers among those. I will put some pics and prices in the for sale section once I have sorted them out.
