Toolrest stem depth collar
« on: February 04, 2019, 01:09:18 PM »
Very often when turning it is necessary to make frequent horizontal adjustments to the toolrest whilst maintaining the same height.  For this an extremely useful time-saver is a depth collar fitted to the toolrest stem.

However, for my Nova DVR lathe with a 1" diameter toolrest stem the cost of such a collar is £36 (plus carriage) which is extortionate  :o

Time to shop around online and, after some careful searching I came up with these UK suppliers which may be useful to others wanting to do the same thing.

Bearings R Us (Huddersfield Bearings) offered exactly what I needed (SEE HERE) at a cost of £3.06 plus £1.50 carriage.  I ordered from them and  you can judge from the photographs that the collars are excellent and use a grub screw (with Allen key - not supplied) for attachment to the stem.

There are 41 collar sizes to choose from ranging from 4mm - 80 mm inside diameter (Metric and imperial measurements included - see full range HERE)

Another company is Bearing Boys which I haven't tried but which appear to be even cheaper with a 1" collar costing £2.98 including carriage.

Hope this is useful

Tim

This is a great example of the good that a forum like this can achieve....and I do hope that you can wangle some commission, Tim. I usually make my own collars for occasional use, but these seem a darned good price, so I'll get a couple.

...that's pretty much what I do, but ply wears and becomes a little unreliable....and you  can't put a grub screw through it!

I have used the Bearing Boys in the past when renovating stationary engines. Will be ordering a couple of collars from them. Good service and reasonable prices.
