Hi
This a strange one question one when did record start making Jacobs Chuck's?
Is it a clone of a Jacobs chuck?
If it's a genuine Jacobs chuck is it a keyed version? Does it have  milled stripes down the barrel of the chuck this barrel should have the milled teeth on top where you fit the chuck key into the little round portion of the the key fits into the body also if it's a geniune Jacobs  chuck it will have number on it ?
If yes to those  questions then you can slide the barrel  With the teeth milled on it off the body of the chuck taking care not to damage the chuck, try warming the chuck in some warm oil/ parrafin mixture.

No, definitely not a genuine Jacob's but an excellent clone and versatile bit of kit.  I have had one of these for 9 years now, use it frequently, and have never had a problem.  It is much more versatile than a Jacob's chuck inasmuch it has a ¾" 16tpi threaded insert so can be screwed directly to the headstock spindle thread of a lathe with that size thread.  With an adaptor it will fit the headstock spindle thread of my NOVA DVR.  A MT1 or MT2 taper can be screwed into the back so it can be used on a small or large lathe.

The photograph shows it with the various adaptors  that I use

Hi
It's not a Jacobs it's not even a good cone of one, Chinese origin i would soak it  in a good sized tin can with a fifty mixture of oil &  paraffin for a couple of days open a metal workers vice and with the knurled ring sitting over the jaws so the main body of the my chuck can slide down when you dissasemble the chuck with something over the jaws to protect them on no account hit the chuck jaws give the chuck a couple of smart taps with a engineers mallet not with a hammer try after the first tap it may have freed it's self when  you have dissasembled and cleaned it out reverse the process and reassemble use a dry lubricant.
Good luck

Hi
just another thought are your chuck jaws discoloured brown like in that photograph?
That' can be caused by old lubricant or heat i would suggest it's lubricant or lack of it these Chuck's need cleaning out from time to time  soak them in some pariffin and thin oil.

Hi both, hopefully, two piccies will attach.

Mine says Record 13mm, so not as big as Tim's. Thanks for the photos,
I had'nt considered the morse taper might be a screw thread (doh !!!!!), so
just tried my luck with it but, still no movement.

Thanks Redtails for the advice, I'll try as you said and leave it in
a jar of oil and see what happens. You can just see from one of the
piccies, that the jaws are slightly discoloured to brown, thanks for your reply.

Regards - Jim

Hi please don't just soak in oil that will do so as mix the oil the thinner the better with some parrafin mixed in so it's nice and thin let the paraffin do it's work the oil on it's own will do sod all my friend.

Sorry, I meant to add this to the previous post

I think this is the chuck...

https://www.recordpower.co.uk/product/12-drill-chuck--1-morse-taper

but I can't remember where I got it from...It certainly looks quite old.

Maybe I should explain that I've been away from lathe work for fifteen years
or so. I was quite a beginner then, but change of job forced me to
give it up until recently. So, I'm kind of starting again, trying to forget
old bad habits, I've become interested in penmaking but now starting
to get back to small bowls, vases thingies etc. I'm guessing
that I got this chuck from ebay or something similar in my previous
time.
It does'nt owe me anything, but, would be nice to get it going again
just out of sentimentality (if not, to save money !!)

Best wishes - Jim

Hi
Try some release /penetrating fluid you want something to shift the grunge that's why i said warm oil mixture with caution. Oil will just sit there and add a film to the steel that's why said about the brown stain in first stage the oil has just there doing it's job the second stage it's gone off and in the end evaporated and left that stain.
Have you never smelt  oil when it's gone off it stinks to high heaven.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your help on this one but I've decided
to give up on it cos the effort involved far outweighs the
outcome.

Thanks Ron, indeed we are as one on the 'unmentionable program'.
What I say is .....'Bring back Barry Bucknell '  !!!!

Thanks again everyone, regards - Jim
