Hollow form with finial
« on: February 14, 2011, 11:06:45 AM »
Here's a hollow form made from masur birch with a blackwood finial. There is also a blackwood insert in the neck and the finial screws in to it.

That's spooky...

I turned an almost identical shaped HF today.

Very nice piece, Paul. It looks like feathers or vines falling over the shoulder. Nice effect.

Hi Paul,
very nice indeed, I like the idea of srewing in the finial rather than glueing it in.

John

Hi Paul,

Another fantastic piece.

I really like Massur birch - is it commonly available in the UK or is it a case of who you know ;)

Hi Simon,
It is fairly readily available but seems to vary in quality a lot so I tend to buy it in person rather than by mail order. Also as I generally buy it in log form, I try to either weed out any split logs or be selective about which ones I buy so I can maximise my use without wasting any wood.
Unfortunately, masur birch also seems to go up in price every time I look but it's such a nice wood to work with, I just can't resist!

Hi Paul,

Where do you source it from?

Cheers Martin.

Hi Martin,

Didn't you know? it grows on trees!  ;D

but seriously.... I often buy it from Yandles when I go there. I have also bought it from Craft Supplies (when they had some in stock). I'm sure I've seen it at other suppliers too on occasion but I guess it depends if they have it in stock.
If anyone knows of any other suppliers who usually keep this in stock, I would be interested to hear.
