Camphor Laurel with embellishment
« on: November 03, 2011, 02:21:21 AM »
Had a small piece of CL that needed something to show it in a better light. Finished with Danish Oil not buffed as yet. 5x7 approx.

That's a pretty form, Hughie. How long did you work on it?

I like the effect of asymmetry the fluting gives the piece, what tools did you use to achieve it please.

Hi Hughie
Very nice shape. It would have looked better against a neutral background, ie lightbox etc. The straight lines on the table confuse the eye. Nevertheless good work.

Andy I did not really pay too much attention to the time frame. Perhaps about 4-5hrs all told over several days, I expect this to be less on any subsequent ones. I started the project with out the right tools  :D so lost a bit of time there. CL is a very soft  wood and very easy to turn and carve.

:D small world Dragonfly. My lathe has a 24 stop set up. So there are 24 flutes with the lines drawn with a compass, carved with a dremel and a archer reciprocating carver attachment, file and sandpaper.

True Roger, I have yet to build my light box, also it would have better if I had the darker grain area at the top  rather than the bottom where it is now.
