Paper Seed Pot Maker
« on: February 18, 2016, 11:20:22 AM »
Well you asked me to post any videos I make !!
Here is the latest. A great little project for anyone.
I have sold many of these well over 1,000
This video is a little like many on YouTube so I hope you are interested in it. I don't like posting run of the mill videos on this forum so please tell me if you don't want me to post these sort of clips.
Enjoy and any questions are welcome but please be patient waiting for answers.

Probably a couple of hours work there Steve with the speed and efficiency of your work. Always a pleasure and inspiring to watch.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Rick

Haven't seen anything like that before. Ingenious. Thanks for sharing.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Great video Steve and without the OTT commentary like the American ones!
It just goes to show what sharp tools can do in a short space of time.

Just watched the video and it is similar to ones I used to make ages ago but had forgotten all about. Needless to say your way is better and easier lol.

Steve,

I watched the video twice in succession, just to watch the upwards flick to the skew to form the neck of the handle section, I've never seen that move/cut before.

I'm going to have to learn that one.

Keep these coming, please.

Thanks again for all your comments.
Bryan it is something I do lots and is really just a progression from the movement you make when turning a vase shape and you meet the sweep in the neck but you cut the final bit with the point.
Pete I have made these for years and it was a friend who first asked me to make one. His Mother made the pots with a small glass jar and he asked me to make a wooden version.

Brilliant! I love watching your skill with the skew and had never even heard of a seed pot maker before this.

One question, why do you knock off the corners of the base using a tablesaw and jig? I would have thought that would be slower than doing it on the lathe - especially at the speed with which you work.

Thanks Duncan, it would be quicker but doing it on a screw sometimes taking big cuts the thread rips in the wood and I would rather not waste any timber.

I love it!

Almost becomes an obsession sometimes, not wasting wood, but I thought it was confined to amateurs such as myself.
