Large plank of rosewood.....but what type?
« on: April 22, 2015, 02:40:18 PM »
Can anyone help identify the type of rosewood (?) in this plank that I recently acquired from an old cabinet maker's workshop please. He informed me that he had had it lurking at the back of his workshop for decades. It is 82 1/2" in length, between 9 1/8" and 10 1/2" wide, and 2" thick. It weighs 20kg.
Thanks.

No idea but it is a beautiful bit of wood.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

That's a beauty, I think it is Honduras Rosewood. A nice find.

Looks kind of Cocobolo like, but the Rosewood family is pretty huge. Either way, save it for something special, and when you use it, protect yourself because Rosewoods are known to trigger allergies, even if you don't have any!!

Enjoy

Can I suggest that you check out the wood-database... http://www.wood-database.com/ and a word of advise...it's always worth adding a picture of freshly cut end-grain. Much of the science of timber identification lies in the nature of the end grain!

I've sen bubinga that looks like that as well with the stark contrast between sap wood and heart wood. Whatever it is it's a beautiful wood.

20kg for 0.93ft3 is awfully light only equating to roughly 47lbft3 and if it is a rosewood then the only two that get close are brazilian or yucatan. most rosewoods are close to the weight of water at 62.4lbft3

more likely is that it is one of the padauk family lots of woods in it are referred to as rosewoods which can look very similar in grain and colour but are lighter in weight.

please clean up the endgrain and i'll see if i can help.

I'm not a great user of tropical woods but I have been turning small pieces from Bubinga lately, and this look much like that, so I'll side with Pete.
