Graham, got to look through my logbook as to having a piece that size, easier than turning out the stock bins.

6x3 blank .. need not be a bowl.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hi David. No, definitely doesn't have to be a bowl. Definitely doesn't have to not be a bowl either  :)

Will have a reread the brief as to which Mark referred to as a blank .. it's normal as being the round.

Pity not to have Mark's own impart on the subject.

Hi I assumed that a blank could be square or round.
I've started my piece using a Square is this still OK.
When the time comes where will the photographs be posted. This link or gallery.

In Marks original post he said
"So as an idea <cut>Why not lets think about what we can do with a bowl turned from a standard 6 inch dia x 3 inch bowl blank." So Mark was talking more about how you decorate or enhance a bowl.
We have moved on from this to a challenge 'what can be made from a 6X3 bowl blank. As far as shape is concerned..... I was picturing a round one but it was not specified so I guess a square one counts as well. it is still a bowl blank and final products rarely reflect the original blank shape.
Do we want this to be a (prize less ) competition ? If so then Mark might be persuaded to judge it.
Is Mark able to post here all the time ? I see he shows up as a 'guest'

Mark said it is up to you round bowl blank 6" dia x 3" thick or a spindle section 3" x 3" x 6" long, just see what you can come up with.

Thanks for that George. I think we will stick with the 6 X 3 bowl blank, a spindle can be got from that anyway.
