Newel post blanks
« on: December 05, 2013, 08:33:49 PM »
Hi

Does anyone know a good, consistent supplier of newel post blanks?
I need something about 200mm square, by whatever length.

I did find a place recently via google, but I can't seem to be able to find them again.

Many thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan....there's a company from Wrexham, near Chester, that sells newel post blanks. This link is to one of their ebay listings....this aprticular one is for laminated oak blanks, but check out their other items for sale as they have a massive range and might well have solid, rather than laminated stock.

personally I would rather have laminated blanks as you run the risk of the timber splitting if done from solid that size.
Dan any decent joinery company will glue this up for you.

Dan

Do you actually want 200mm square newel posts? That's 8"!!  4"/100mm is more usual?

Also, you don't mention what timber you are after?

Yep, 200mm, and as for the timber, preferable sycamore, but any hardwood will do.
I'm beginning to think that the laminated approach is best.

Something you could look at Dan is making a hollow newel post. Work out what thickness timber you need to turn an 8 inch diameter to your required profile, glue the 4 pieces together (I would tongue and groove them together too) and then cut a stopper for each end and fix that in and then centre it and turn away to your hearts delight!(or whatever profile)
This is an old method used to cut down on material costs and weight. (imagine an 8 inch Oak newel) Depending on the thickness used you may have to beef part of it up to take any tenons etc.
If you need a drawing to help explain let me know.
