Title: Redgum
Post by: hughie on June 12, 2019, 12:13:34 AM
Redgum with quilting, for me this is a little unusual as most Regums I come across dont have much if any quilting. Sometime ago I had the opportunity to remove a very old Redgum stump from a local church property. A well weathered stump of around 1.5m in dia and the original tree must have been massive as the whole stump was quilted. As a general estimate of age apparently with Eucalypts 1cm per year so this would make around 150 years old when it was cut down.

Height 20cm by 11cm dia  finish is multiple coats of Wipe On Poly satin then buffed. I use satin as I find the gloss looks a bit like a plastic coating. Wall thickness is around 3-5 mm carved inside and out.
Thoughts , comments, critique all welcome.

Hughie,

Great work as ever, still creating that flowing organic look in your work that is so distinctive, and the inside this time as well.

I'm thinking you've created the natural edge effect, rather than actually having a natural edge.

Yes, the rim or lip is burnt with an iron to contrast the quilting and finish. It didnt look right, perhaps a little contrived, heres a view prior to burning

Hughie,
you're right it does look a little contrived. Knowing your love of curves, I'm surprised you did not do that around the rim instead, dipping to the corners.

Hah! you have found my conundrum go with a formal precise lip or a natural type burnt edge. Both would work but it took awhile for me to decide which way to jump :)

Hughie,
I really like the piece as photographed in the subsequent post. The lovely clean top edge ties the outer surface carving to the inner "ribs" more effectively. The quality of the carving and finish look superb ! A lovely piece of wood.

Always a pleasure to see your work Hughie .... A great looking piece. Knowing how hard this wood is to work with
the symmetry of it all is outstanding As Always

In this image it does show the detail better and much has to do with the matt finish, plus my photographic ability with shiny surfaces :)
