Title: Just curious about this lathe
Post by: JollyJim on May 30, 2019, 11:27:36 AM
Hi All,

Sorry about the length of this link, but just browsing on eBay amd came across this
old warhorse. I was just interested in why it has so many gears but it's also
belt-driven. I'd be interested to know if anyone has any info on it, thanks - Jim

It is a metal turning lathe and the gears are used for cutting different thread when screw cutting

As Derek said, also the toolholder is on a screw, so can be driven at different rates with different combinations of gears, hence the collection in the box.

Hiya, and thanks for that link....

This is absolutely amazing, to think that all those moving
parts are designed to have no play between them, that
all the threads have no free movement and that all the
gears mesh accurately....truly mind-bending. And, not
only that, but it's quite aesthetically beautiful....

I want one......can I do pens on it ?

Thanks again, best wishes - Jim

Yes you can but it would take some practice if you wanted anything other than a straight body to the pen. And it would need cleaning straight after work sawdust  will not be too friendly to the machine and can gum up the workings

But the other option is to buy it for the cross slides, then you can do ornamental turning.
