Title: Lathe advice?
Post by: alisboy on December 21, 2011, 02:38:50 PM
Hello to all.
I am new to the forum and would like some advice on the lathe i am thinking of buying. It is a Jet1220 or the VS version complete with the axminster K10 chuck, any comments about this lathe as a starter for myself would be a big help.

Ernie
PS. The seasons greeting to all.

Hello Ernie, welcome to the forum.

I have the AXMINSTER M330 version of this lathe in the workshop as a teaching lathe and have not had a problem with it. It's a fine machine. The K10 is a good choice of chuck for it as it is not too heavy. If you can, I'd for for the VS version. You'll want it soon enough anyway so better get the right machine first!

Good luck and happy and safe turning.

Andy

Hi Ernie,

Welcome on to the down hill slide of woodturning, should you of already got the Lathe I'm a bit late ... if not the Jet would by a good choice as Andy has said and VS a must.. it has the 1"x 8TPI thread, so the chuck will fit any of the larger Lathes in the AX range at a later date, one other there is, Dave has been very pleased with the AW1416VS Lathe,  http://www.awgb.co.uk/awgbforum/index.php?topic=200.0 (http://www.awgb.co.uk/awgbforum/index.php?topic=200.0) ....  but it is a little bit more in price and the thread is M33 x 3.5mm, so fewer options on upgrade.

Hope you enjoy which ever you get, happy turning.

David

hello Ernie

I have the AW1416VS which is a great lathe and I have no hesitation in recommending it - I see axminster have this as a packages with the K10 chuck and a selection of jaws.  I bought it because I have a Nova with an M33 x 3.5mm chuck.  Otherwise both lathes seem to have much the same spec

let us know what you went for and how it performs.

Cheers Dave
